520 | _aThis handbook has been designed as a practical guide and training tool. It is meant to assist all types of practitioners to deal with conflict in a peace keeping environment, including military officers, police officers and civilian peace keepers and peace builders - such as political affairs, civil affairs, human rights observers and those working in mission support. It is also intended for those working alongside peace operations, such as humanitarian and development workers, election observers and others. The skills and approaches contained in this handbook are based on the reality that in the vast majority of conflict situations, peace keepers who are deployed have to rely on their personal communication and negotiation skills to manage a wide range of conflict situations. In some cases they deal with ad-hoc crisis situations, such as negotiating their way through a roadblock or calming an unruly crowd. In others they may deal with long standing community conflicts or the resolution of national-level long-term and deeply seated conflicts. Some peacekeepers may be better prepared for this than others. This conflict management methodology builds on ACCORD's experience of over a decade of conflict management training and experience of over a decade of conflict management training and experience in Africa, but is specifically designed to meet the needs of civilian, military and police peacekeepers and peacebuilders in contemporary complex peace operations in Africa. | ||
